Hubert Davis enters his fourth season as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team after guiding the program to the Sweet 16 of the 2024 NCAA Division I tournament.[1][2]
The Tar Heels, seeded No. 1 in the West Region, lost to top-seeded Alabama 89-87 in the Sweet 16 on March 29, 2024, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.[3][4] UNC defeated No. 16 Wagner 90-62 in the first round on March 21 at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and No. 8 Michigan State 85-69 in the second round on March 23 at the same venue.[5][6]

The 2023-24 Tar Heels finished 29-8 overall and 17-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, placing second behind Duke.[7][8] Davis' career record at UNC through the 2023-24 season is 78-29, for a .729 winning percentage.[9]
Davis, who played for the Tar Heels from 1988 to 1992, succeeded Roy Williams as head coach on April 1, 2021, following Williams' retirement after 33 seasons and three national titles (2005, 2009, 2017).[10][11] In Davis' debut 2021-22 season, UNC reached the national championship game, losing to Kansas 72-69 on April 4, 2022.[12]
The program plays home games at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, capacity 20,711.[13] North Carolina has won six NCAA men's titles overall, tied for third-most, and maintains a tradition of promoting from within its coaching staff and alumni ranks.[14]
Former Tar Heel player Kenny Smith (1984-87), now a basketball analyst for TNT, is among notable program alumni with strong ties to UNC basketball.[15]
The 2024-25 season is set to begin in early November 2024, amid ongoing changes in college basketball driven by name, image and likeness (NIL) policies adopted by the NCAA in 2021.[16][17]
