Rapinoe: Auriemma Bears Extra Duty as White Coach
Megan Rapinoe criticized UConn coach Geno Auriemma for a shouting match with South Carolina coach Dawn Staley after their NCAA Final Four semifinal on April 3, 2026, in Phoenix. Rapinoe, speaking on a podcast with her wife Sue Bird, said Auriemma has an "added responsibility" for positive representation because he is a white man in women's basketball, a predominantly Black space. Auriemma apologized in a social media statement for his postgame conduct.
Bird, a former UConn star under Auriemma, called his actions "wrong and disappointing" but noted his apology. "Listen, I think what Coach Auriemma did last night was obviously wrong and disappointing," Bird said. Rapinoe added that Auriemma's stature demands he lead by example in allyship, emphasizing respect for Staley's team and staff.
The dispute arose after UConn's win when Auriemma expressed frustration that Staley had not shaken his hand before tipoff, despite video showing a pregame handshake. "No matter the growth, investment and success, women’s basketball sits at the intersection of gender, race, sexuality, and diversity because of who he is in this sport," Rapinoe said. Auriemma stated, "There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina."
South Carolina advanced to the national championship but lost to UCLA. Auriemma affirmed his respect for Staley's program, saying his reaction detracted from their performance.
